Learn Guitar Lead

learn guitar lead
What is easier to learn how to play for a young person just starting, guitar (bass or lead) or drums?

Drums.

I play all three, and (for a young beginner) you can start with:

A bass drum
A snare drum
A hi-hat
A cymbal

That’s how I started eight years ago.

Not to bash the other two, but lead guitar is definitely NOT easy to learn, maybe rhythm guitar but certainly not lead. Bass is also pretty good for beginners, not a whole lot of speed needed, but learning scales are a must.

The reason I say drums is simple: You have four things to hit to make sound. On a bass, you have four strings and upwards of sixteen notes on each string. You can’t see the note you’re about to play on a bass. You can see the snare, hat, bass drum, and cymbal, and there’s no real way to screw up which one you “meant” to strike. And by starting with the drums, you’re practicing tempo, which is ALSO a basic fundamental of any guitaring. You almost ONLY have to deal with tempo on the drums, while you have to deal with tempo AND the notes with a guitar.

I started playing the drums by setting up a Casio keyboard to loop the preset drum patterns, then copying them. Now I can do fills, use a 10+ piece kit, and play songs like a vamped up version of “The Becoming” from Nine Inch Nails and “My Hero” by the Foo Fighters. I can only really play “Hotel California” on lead, and it took me six months to learn it, practicing excessively every day. And I can play a bunch of stuff on bass and rhythm, but I can tell you now it takes much longer to learn a song for any guitar than it does to learn for the drums.
